New Year, New Goals

One goal that I hope won't fly by night before the end of the month is my commitment to update our family blog more regularly. I'm going to spare myself the feeling of failure by NOT overcommitting (another resolution) that I'll update every day, or even every week. My goal is to simply get more family memories documented so that friends and family can follow along and so that I'll have an easier time with our family scrapbooks when I sit down to do those!

Kids!!! Everyone loves Kid Updates. So here are mine:

Olivia is going to Christian academy this year and she is really doing well. She's finally starting to overcome some of her shyness issues, so we are very thankful that we've been blessed witht the opportunity to attend HCA.

Olivia is also enjoying her first season competing at Level 2 Gymnastics. She has her first meet in December and brought home 5 medals, 4th Place All Around. We were very proud of her! She has her second meet on Sunday and she is beyond excited.

Zachary is growing into quite the young man! He is all boy and he teaches me something new every day. He's finishing his last year at the church preschool and will hopefully join Olivia at HCA next year. We're still praying about whether or not he'd benefit from an extra year in the young 5's program at FB.

Zachary is our little imagination man. He can think of and create anything. Just yesterday he and his Daddy made a movie and I must say it's a Blockbuster. He was so excited to share it with me when I got home last night and I was grinning ear to ear while I watched him (as Mario) defeat Bowser (aka: Rex from Toy Story). Who knows, maybe someday he'll be an actor or a director and can take care of his dear Mommy and Daddy when we're old.

A Choir of Snow Angels

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!!!

We had our own Choir of Snow Angels in our driveway today. After making a snowman, snowballs, and sledding, it seems that making Snow Angels was the favorite winter pastime. When we asked Olivia who taught her how to do that....she said, "I saw it on a movie!" Geeze, they're already being influenced by TV!



I was on camcorder duty when both kids decided to nail me with snowballs! Thank goodness they had on 17 layers so their aim was off due to limited range of motion! The camcorder made it safe through all of the excitement.

We'd heard that it was bad out, but it really looked harmless. Just a little snow, right? Well, if you notice in the picture above, they've roped off the top of this hill in our subdivision and roped off the entrance at the bottom of the hill....so 10 families are stuck...with our very own SNOW MOUNTAIN!!! All of the kids in the neighborhood came to our hill and took advantage of the slippery slopes. They brough cooler tops, pool floats, and some even had real sleds - but all of them had REAL FUN!!

Daddy and Olivia took a ride down the road and had a blast. And yes, that harmless wet spot at the top of the hill is the ever so infamous black ice. Mommy knows first hand...she slipped and slid half way down on her bottom. No sled required!

The two Winter Wonders loved getting out and playing in the white mess. But they didn't dare leave the house without their sunglasses!

Poor Zachary has been sick all week. Despite waking up fever-free this morning, he wasn't up for much playtime. After about 15 minutes, he was ready to call it a day.

After soaking through 4 pairs of gloves, Olivia finally gave in to her freezing hands and decided to call it a day herself.

Only 4 neighbors had to sacrifice mailboxes to provide all of the neighborhood kids with a few hours of snowy fun! Thanks Mailboxless Neighbors!!!

It's been reported that there is a Gruffalo on the loose. He's about 6 feet tall and meets the following description. He has:


Terrible Tusks and Terrible Claws and Terrible Teeth in his Terrible Jaws

He has Knobbly Knees and Turned out Toes and a Poisonous Wart on the End of his Nose.

His Eyes are Orange and his Tounge is Black & he has Sharp Purple Prickels that Cover his Back.


He's been known to feast on Roasted Fox, Owl Ice-cream, and Scrambled Snake, so be sure that you're Foxes are brought indoors, your Owls are secure in their cages, and be sure you're snakes don't sliver too far away!


After sighting a Gruffalo on our back deck (and he must be a good climber because there are no stairs from the ground to our deck!!) we posted a sign on the Front Yard that says "No Gruffalos". It appears that the sign doesn't work because the Gruffalo is still trying to get in; however I've been informed that he has yet to enter our actual home because he refuzes to take his shoes off! (At least he has manners.)


We know for a fact that his only fear is a small field mouse that eats Gruffalo Crumble for breakfast (and nuts as his snack). We're desperately trying to reach this field mouse for his assistance. We're willing to offer free room and board, as long as he agrees to live in a secured cage (yes, Mommy is afraid of rodants - even if they do keep Gruffalos away).


Please be on the lookout for the Gruffalo in your area. It's also speculated that he may be accompanied by a witch, yes a real one, not just a kid in a costume, but that lead has yet to be verified.

Little Fishie in the Sea....or the Pool

What do you get when you cross a dare devil with a copy cat?

A 3-year old who learns to swim and sends her mom into cardiac arrest!!!

Olivia took 2 weeks of swimming lessons earlier this summer and did great. She was the youngest one in her class and was by far the bravest of them all. The teachers just laughed at her b/c she'd hang on to the side and push herself under and stay there - for a REALLY long time. After I fought the urge to run over and jerk her up, she'd emerge saying, "Mommy I touched the floor!!" Good for you kid! Now swim down and get Mommy's heart and pick it up off the bottom of the pool!

The last day of lessons, she got in over her head and got choked and has been really timid ever since. We'd go to the neighborhood pool and she'd stay in the baby pool the whole time, refusing to jump in, put her face in, or float on her back. Well, I agreed to take her to the pool on Wednesday on one condition....NO BABY POOL.

In her biggest Big Girl voice, she looked at me and said, "Mommy, I don't want to go in that Baby Pool. I'm going to jump in, put my face in the water and float on my back like a big girl."

Sure enough, she was swimming across the whole pool before we left. Here's a little clip.

Before this clip, she swam the entire width of the pool, she swam under my legs to the stairs, and then she showed me how she could jump off the edge backwards! I wasn't expecting the latter, thus the reason for my cardiac arrest.

Zach's new Robot Leg

Zachary is the coolest boy in town now with his new blue robot leg!!! He got it Tuesday night, and all the other kids are so jealous!!!!

That's right, we've had our first broken bone, and Zachary's handling it like a trooper. His independent ways got him a broken tibia (the large bone in the lower leg). We actually thought that he had bumped his head after falling off the bottom step of the sitter's car, so when we headed to the ER we were expecting much worse. Three x-rays and a CAT scan later, the doc gave him this super cool robot leg which he'll be wearing for the next 4-6 weeks.

He's been such a sport about it all. He's clung to his cars and will not go anywhere without them. And since he's challenged in the mobility department, he's been watching CARS the movie about 3 times a day (on and off). He's already figured out that he can still zoom his cars around the floor just like he did before.

We go back to the Orthopedist on Tuesday. Luckily we get to see the same great Doc that treated Morgan's broken arm who Mel Mel and Morgan highly recommend...what's the odds that we'd get the same doc....

FIRST HAIRCUT

In other news, Mommy's baby doesn't look like a baby at all anymore. Just a couple of weeks ago, Zachary got his first haircut. You can see the curls somewhat in this pic, but check out the previous post for the full affect.



And now look at him. Such a big boy!!! Mommy and Daddy were both fighting back the tears when Ms. Debbie chopped off those beautiful curls!!! Oh, it still saddens me. But people were mistaking him for a girl.... Is that funny or what - Olivia was always mistaken for a boy and Zach is mistaken for a girl....don't these people look at the kid's clothes before they ask????
In other news, we have a new baby nephew. We just welcomed LP to the family. We'll post those pics soon. Mom and Dad are doing well and are basking in the joy of parenthood....between feedings of course!

UMMMMM Coookie!!

What a yucky face!!! My little man found a treat that he loves over the holidays. Gingerbread Men!! Uncle Stewart sent two containers of home made cookies, and Zach's favorite were the gingerbread men.

Well, Olivia made her very own Gingerbread Man at school. It was a present for Mommy and Daddy! Well, one night after Christmas, this delicious little Gingerbread Man was too enticing to resist and.....

Yep, Zach ate the foot off of Olivia's Gingerbread Man ornament. After taking a big ol' bite, he came running over to me wiping his tongue with his hands. I wasn't sure if it just tasted bad or if it was burning his mouth. So, I did what any concerned mother would do - I called Poison Control.

When the lady asked me why I was calling, I couldn't help but giggle when I told her that my 18 month old ate the leg off of a Gingerbread Man ornament. Luckily, she giggled too. After going over a list of possible things that the ornament could have been made of, we concluded that if it was made in a 2-year old preschool class, it couldn't contain anything harmful.

I did decided to call Olivia's teacher just to be on the safe side, and we were right. The ornament was made of only the finest ingredients: Applesauce, Cinnamon, and GLUE. Perfectly harmless, but not exactly tasty - especially compared to Uncle Stewart's cookies.

Moral of the Story - Don't put ornaments that look like yummy cookies within the reach of a hungry 18 month old!!

Me and My Bubba

I love my little brother so much. I can always make him laugh, and he loves to play with me. I teach him how to build cool stuff with legos and how to have a tea party (but he has to use the blue plates, and I use the pink.)

My baby brother is one of my best friends.

The two kiddos really are best friends. I'm so glad that we had them close together. Watching them play together is so much fun. Olivia is the best big sister. She ALWAYS watches out for her brother. She always puts her little hand on his back and gently leads him where ever she wants him to go. And he is crazy about his sister. He loves playing in her room and joining in to her make believe games. I hope that they will always be close.

I also have a story that goes along with these pics that I have to share. Zachary is sick in these photos. Aside from his rosey cheeks, he went to the doctor earlier this morning and was diagnosed with an ear infection. Luckily Daddy was home today, and he was able to get the kids ready for the appointment and I met them at the pediatrician's office.

I got out of the car to greet my prince and princess, only to find both of them dressed like homeless children. Zachary was wearing exactly what he has on in these photos and Olivia was wearing blue pants, a red velvet shirt, and purple crocs!!! As soon as I saw them, I flipped out. What was my husband thinking?

I hate to admit this, but I was so embarrassed by what they were wearing, I simply couldn't go in to the appointment with them. Yes - that's right. I abandoned my sick child to save myself from the embarrassment of taking them into the doctor's office looking like that. So, Olivia and I went to Target to buy new outfits while Daddy took his orphan-dressed child into the appointment.

Yes, Josh is color blind. I do have to help him with his work clothes almost every day. There have been times that he's come home wearing gray pants and a brown shirt. So, he really means well when he tried to dress them, but it was still a disaster. Now, I lay out their clothes BEFORE I leave for work!!!!

New Year's Slumber Party

Happy New Year!!!!

Olivia started this new year off right with a Slumber Party with her Godsister, Kristina. When we called Kristina's mom to ask if she could sleep over, we weren't shocked that Kristina had already packed her bag and was anticipating our invitation.

After having Pizza, the girls headed for the table to make friendship bracelets....and necklaces...and earrings! This bead set was a steal at Target, and the girls LOVED it. Kristina, having the big heart that she does, not only helped Olivia along but also made bracelets for her sister and her sister's best friend. She's always thinking of others.



Here's Olivia hard at work on her bracelet. You can see she's already wearing her first masterpiece. I remember this time last year giving Olivia beads to make a necklace and she didn't have the coordination to thread the beads. But as you can see, now she's a pro. Maybe she'll grow up to design jewelry for Tiffany's!!! (Remember sweethear, Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend!)

Kristina models her beautiful necklace as well. She did an amazing job. I was actually shocked at her craftsmanship. But then again, this kid has always been very crafty! Notice that the girls are wearing their Robes. Hannah Tanna for Olivia and Camp Rock for Kristina. They are too cute!!!

And what slumber party would be complete without pedicures. The girls got new pedis complete with flower stickers on the big toes and a glittery top-coat. (Kristina has her Mama's feet, Olivia has her Daddy's.)

As the night wound down, the girls decided to read. Snuggled on their sleeping bags, Kristina read Olivia The Lorax. I was shocked that Kristina could pronounce some of those words. They often stump me!!!

And like all girls, they pretend to be asleep when Mommy comes in to check on them. Olivia's hidden smile gives it all away!

These godsisters had a great time at their first sleepover in 2009. From our family to yours, we hope that your new year will be blessed beyond measure!!!

2009 Blogger Buddy Get Together

Wow! I haven't had that many comments to a post since I got prego with Zachary!!! I'm glad you all like the idea, but since there are several people who can't make it on Saturday, we've had a suggestion to do it early next year, say MLK weekend. I'm not sure how many people travel during that weekend, but we'll try to set a date so that most people can attend.

I think that most of you were okay with the inflatable playground idea. A few of us have been to one in Buford that was great. How is that location for the group - I don't know where all of you live?

Also, if anyone who's interested will email me, I'll send out an E-Vite and we can suggest/vote on dates that way.

Blogger Buddy Get Together

It's been a while, there's lots to update, but I have to get this out before time passes us by.

Do you ever visit blogs and develop friendships, only to realize that you've never met half the people you're "friends" with? We talk to each other, encourage each other, pray for each other, and laugh with each other - but some of us have never met.

Ever wonder how Royal Family knows Evan's Life? Ever wonder how Mel's Haven and the Bresnan Family Blog came to know each other? Well, the answer is - we all knew someone who knew someone and we started peeking in on each other's lives....now it's time to meet our virtual friends face to face!!!

A few of us have been talking about a Blogger Buddy Get together. A date that we've picked is November 1st. I know it's a week from this Saturday, but it's a few weeks before the holidays begin and we'll all be tied up with Turkey and Stockings....so, let's see how many of us can get together next Saturday for the First Ever Blogger Buddy reunion.

If you are interested, leave a comment on my blog. We've had one person volunteer their house, and one person suggest all of us pitching in to rent a party room at an Inflatables Playground. Slashin' Good Time

We had a Splashin' Good Time at the new Aquatic Center in Gainesville. We packed the kids up Sunday night for a trip to the neighborhood pool. Sunscreen on, kids in the car, we're on our way....only to find our pool closed due to contamination. Well, what do you do with 3 kids screaming "Pool, pool, pool!!"???? You find an alternative.

Melanie remembered a new Aquatic Center that opened this past weekend. Only 18 minutes away, $4 admission for me and Josh, and we had ourselves a splashin' good time.

Zach actually liked the water falling on him until the very last time That time he got some water in his nose and was DONE, but up until then, he like it....surprisingly!

This was the main attraction for us. This part of the pool was waist deep for Olivia, so she could do whatever she wanted without her floaties. Here's Morgan tyring to get out of the way, and if you look closely, that's Olivia entering the water - Spread Eagle!!! I was shocked, but she LOVED it. Sometimes she would land on her feet, sometimes on her rear, but she never got scared and kept going back for more. I think we'll be doing swimming lessons here this spring!!!

There was another pool that had this river with a current. We popped the kids in life vests and let them go with the flow....pun intended.

And here's my Little Man. He loved it just as much as the girls. The fountain was the favorite for him. He literally attacked the water...the cutest thing I've ever seen. He and Daddy even went down the water slide!!! Such a big boy!

So, I highly recommend this place if any of you live in the area. It's called the Frances Meadows Aquatic Center and it's open year round (outside stuff only for 2 more weeks).

Happy Birthday, Mel Mel

Happy Birthday to my favorite cousin and my oldest friend!!!!

Yes, Ladies, today is Melanie's birthday. I won't say how young she is b/c my birthday is soon approaching and I wouldn't want her to return the favor, but today is her special day!!! Melanie is my absolute oldest friend....probably because she's my cousin and I've known her since....well since I was born.

Most of my fondest childhood memories involve Mel Mel. When I went to her house as a kid, we'd always pretend like we were long lost sisters that just stumbled upon one another and then became the best of friends. And she had the first huge slumber party that I ever attended, where we played "Girl Talk" all night long....yeah, you gals remember what I'm talking about, right!!!

Melanie was there for me on that dreaded "First Day of High School" where she sought me out at lunch time to make sure that I didn't have to eat alone. She drug me along with her older friends... and we both had our first and only experience with the "Athens night life" together...though she was of age, I was not and we both tasted beer for the first time and agreed - it SUCKS!!!!! We'll stick to Mountain Dew!!!!!

Melanie has been present for all of my major life events. My wedding day, the birth of my children, and she was right beside me day that I accepted Jesus Christ into my life! How can you go through so much with someone and really find the words to express how much they mean to you???? I dont' think you can, so I'll just have to say:

I love you, Melanie Kate Gravitt. God definitely must have "spent a little more time on you"! You're one of my best friends, and I love you so much. I hope that you have a wonderful birthday (even though it's almost over), and I can't wait for us to have a Mommy n' Me Birthday Celebration!!!!

We Interrupt This Regularly Scheduled Blog...

...to bring you a break from our long vacation post.....

Yeah, it took me so long to do the first few days...I just stopped. I will finish...for the sake of my online memory log, but I wanted to post some pics I've taken recently.

A few weeks ago I took the kiddos to the mall for a leisurely stroll. The kids did so great. The boys were in the stroller and the girls held hands and we window shopped at the hippest stores...Claire's, American Girl, Disney Store, and of course we played on the indoor play ground. Afterwards, we hit the food court for a quick snack...French Fries!!!! North Point Mall has these cool new tables for the kiddos. Aren't they so cute!!!!! (Who says 4 kids are too much to handle???)

After we returned from Vacation, we didn't really do anything exciting for the 4th of July. But we did go shopping to hit some sales with Daddy. And of course, the kids had to ride the carousel. (And no, we're not mall rats...it's just one of the only places I actually think to take out my camera.)

A couple of weeks ago, Jennica and I had dinner with one of our dearest friends. MANDY!!! We hadn't seen her in a year, (since Zachary was born, who was actually born on Mandy's birthday!!), so it was nice to see her and catch up. The three of us can always pick up right where we left off...even if it's been months since we talked. It's so amazing how true friendship can withstand time! I love you, Mandy, and we can't wait to see you soon. Good luck this week at your new school. We're thinking about you!!!!

Today we had a great day at church. Ms. April, our Children's Director, threw a Birthday Party for all of the children in the Children's Ministry. Complete with Ice cream, face painting, tattoos, a bounce house, and tons of fun music. I had my class (2 1/2 through 3) and they all loved it. Olivia was moving and grooving to the Camp Rock songs!!!

Here are Olivia and Zachary enjoying apples on the front porch. They are such sweethearts, and really have started playing so well...but we do have our share of fights. Today, Zachary kept hitting Olivia, and he had to have his first time out(s). Olivia must have been amused that her little brother was finally experiencing this Toddler Torture, so she kept tattle-tailing all afternoon. Finally, in my most loving (read: frustrated) mommy voice, I told her that I didn't want to hear any more tattle-tailing. She proceeded to march right over to her brother and say, "See Zachary, no more tattle-tailing or Mommy's going to put you back in time out!!!" I guess I'll have to sit her down and explain what tattle-tailing is.....

And my baby...who's not a baby any more. He's just growing up so fast. He's saying MaMa, DaDa, No, Night Night, That, More, and Bye-Bye. Night-Night is my absolute favorite thing to hear him say. He's just so precious when he's getting ready for bed!!!

Josh was out of town this whole weekend, so my good friend, Amy, came to keep us company yesterday. She and I had a great time catching up and playing with the kids. Olivia just loved Amy. She woke up yesterday and said, "When is Amy coming to play at my house???" Then last night, she said God Bless Amy before she even blessed me!!! And....she wanted Amy to help her get her Smiley Faces last night....I told Amy, that somehow she had really won Olivia over, because NO ONE does Smiley Faces for Olivia other than Mommy!!! We love you, Amy, and had a GREAT time yesterday. Can't wait to get together again!!!!!

Lastly, my neice and nephey start Kindergarden tommorrow!! Oh, I can't believe they are already going to school. It seems like just yesterday that we welcomed them into the world. And, their little bro is starting Pre-K....so it'll be a busy morning in the Gravitt household tomorrow. Good Luck, Hailee and Dakota!!! Mommy N' Me: Day 3, Let the Sun Shine

Let the Sun Shine....and shine...and shine!!!

Day 3 and we're up early and ready for a boat ride. We decide to take a boat over to Shell Island. For those of you who don't know, Shell Island is just off shore of PC Beach, and it's nothing but beach. No restrooms, no trash cans, no anything other than beach! We were looking forward to a day of SUNSHINE!!!!

Ariel, oh, I mean Olivia, was ready for the beach in her mermaid best.

On the boat, I snapped this picture just before Olivia's hat was blown off by the wind. She and I dove at the same time -she over the edge of the boat to rescue her hat, me over the beach bag to rescue her! It was a close call, but we were able to save both her and her hat....whew! Zachary loved the boat ride too. We got to see several dolphins on our way too! And of course, we constantly kept our eye out for Nemo.

Shell Island did not disappoint. It was beautiful. If I hadn't had the kids, I could have stayed there all day. The boys headed straight for their sand toys. Zach loved the sand. It was one of his favorite things about the beach!

HMMMM, what do you suppose I could do with these two things!!!

Zach may have not known what to do with them, but Olivia and Aunti Lynn Lynn sure did. First we buried Olivia, but she flipped out,. and since she was actually enjoying the beach this time, I didn't press my luck on having her stay still long enough to get out the camera. But DJ was very cooperative and let us grab this shot before he turned into the HULK and broke free!!!


One pic of the three of us on the beach. Do you know how hard it is taking 4 kids to the beach and trying to get pictures!!! I don't think we ever got any where everyone was looking!! But it was all worth it. Sitting on the beach with both of my kids was the greatest feeling I've had in a while. It's what being a mom is all about!!! Creating memories!


BFF!!! These two are too cute! They were playing in the "Baby Water"....that's the water that doesn't cover their feet!!! One of the only ways we could convince Olivia that it would be okay to actually be in the ocean.


But she did come around and start enjoying herself, and my fear of being the only sun-lover in the family started to subside. But meanwhile back at camp.....


Zachary was all tuckered out!!! I rigged up two chairs and a towel to create some shade for him. He slept for about an hour while the other two kids played! Boy, it's hard being a boy!


And even harder to wake up on the BEACH!!! What the heck, Mommy. Where's my blanket? Where's my crib....where am I at??? Let's just say that Little Zachary didn't wake up in the best of moods, but he did eventually come around.

What's going to work? Team Work!!!

We headed back on the next boat back to our resort and let four very tired gets get some rest. We were very fortunate that all of them stayed somewhat on schedule while we were away, and they all had naps every day!!! After nap time we decided to head out for an afternoon of fun, only to find......

Yes, Those are my kids in the car and a huge crack in my windshield. WHAT!!! We had been inside for a few hours and come out to find this. I was convinced that some kids had thrown something off the balcony or had smashed the window with something....I was livid!!! But one hour and one cocky cop later, it was determined that golf-ball-gone-wild had smashed my window.....I officially hate golfers....especially bad ones!!!!


But the night went on and after having dinner out, we went to a little amusement park. The kids were tired so we didn't do much - just enough to tire them out! Here's the Haskell family waiting to buy tickets.


And Mommy with her Princess!!! Oh, isn't she the cutest thing I've ever seen!!!!


And let us not forget about Master Zachary!!! He was such a doll in his little outfit that night. I can't believe I didn't get a picture of him alone!!!


Amber was zooming around on the big race cars. Olivia and I had hoped to give her a run for her money, but my pip-squeak was about a half an inch too short to be a passenger! Too bad....but we'll get you next year, Amber!!!!

The airplanes were the first ride for the little ones. At the last minute, DJ got upset, so he decided to cheer Livi on while she zoomed around the park.


Can you tell that her Grandfather and Great-grandfather were pilots!!! She's a born natural!!!!

This ended up being a LATE night for us. When we got home, half of the resort was without power. We're still not sure what happened...some golfer with a bad swing probably busted a transfuser or something. Our unit wasn't affected - thank God, so we headed straight to bed awaiting what Day 4 would bring!!!
